5 Signs of Critically Weak Leadership

5 Signs of Critically Weak Leadership

During a recent dinner with friends, the conversation turned to the difficulty of working in an organization that lacks strong leadership. One of my friends was particularly engaged and exasperated by the conversation. He remarked that only one individual had been honest with him about the critical lack of senior leadership in his current organization while he was hiring into the firm. This got me thinking about the definitive signs of weak leadership and how one might spot them during an interview. So here it is, 5 warning signs of critically weak leadership.

1) Lack of a clear organizational mission, vision or strategy

During the interview process, can all of your interviewers speak about the mission and vision of the organization? If they pull a card out of their wallet, it is not necessarily a bad sign. Just make sure that they can then tell you how the organization lives up to that mission, and more importantly how they see themselves and your position living up to it as well.

2) Micromanagement or Tyrannical Management

While different types of leaders exhibit different leadership styles, extreme micromanagement or even worse, tyrannical management styles are warning signs of leadership that is having difficulty defining and then executing against the big picture. Unfortunately, this type of management can become contagious within organizations as the lack of a clearly defined strategy or mission impacts more than just the C-level. When interviewing, ask individuals to describe their supervisor’s leadership style. If their leader is truly corrosive, you might not get a straight answer. That is a sign, in and of itself.

3) Poor communication

The inability to communicate is often cited as one of the biggest impediments to organizational success. Successfully sharing ideas, information and inspiration within an organization is increasingly a mark of even middle of the pack leadership. Leaders must not only be effective communicators in their own right, but they must also create an environment that values frictionless communication. Ask your interviewers to describe communication in the organization. Is information shared freely from the top down? Do people say that they often know what they need to know, in a timely fashion? Do they both understand and trust the messages they are getting from leadership? If the answer is no, then perhaps there is a problem.

4) Lack of conflict or corrosive conflict.

Understanding how an organization deals with conflict will give you a clear sense of the organization’s leadership. And unless you are working in the military under a command and control structure, conflict should be an innate and integral part of any successful team. Leaders that fear conflict tend to create organizations that lack diverse thinking, or worse, they create passive aggressive behaviors on the part of their frustrated employees.

Ask how the organization deals with differences in opinion. What is their model for collaboration and consensus? You want to hear that different voices and opinions are welcome, even though they may create conflict. Even better, if they can report that better outcomes are reached as a result of recognizing different voices you likely have strong leadership in place.

5) Lack of organizational resilience

How does the organization respond to setbacks? Solid leadership recognizes that change and challenge are unavoidable parts of running an organization. Resilient leaders find ways of turning those events into learning opportunities, and eventually competitive advantage. This requires leadership to do more than react to setbacks. Leaders should create a culture that uses even small challenges as opportunities to grow and thrive. Simply inquire about how the organization and its leadership handled its most recent setback.

Use Windows Desktop Search like a Pro

Use Windows Desktop Search like a Pro

from Labnol.org - a very good site

Windows Search supports simple operators to help you narrow down search results and find the exact file or email message that you’re looking for. Some real-world examples:

1. Find presentations (ppt files) that contain a particular word.

ext:ppt sales {Search for the word “sales” in file names as well the content of documents}

ext:ppt filename:sales {Search only file names, don’t look inside the file content}

2. Find documents that were created or modified this week.

ext:doc date:this week {replace doc with xls, ppt, etc. for other file types}

In addition to “this week”, you may use values like today, yesterday, last week, past month or even “a long ago” with the date: search operator. It also works with date ranges as in the following examples.

date:13-‎09-‎2010..‎24-‎09-‎2010 {find files added /modified in this date range}

kind:pictures date:>23-09-2010 {find all photographs that were captured after this day}

3. Find files that are taking lot of space on your system.

The following search query will instantly find gigantic video files that are larger than 128 MB in size. If you replace the value “gigantic” with “empty”, you’ll see all the files are 0 KB in size.

size:gigantic kind:video {find large video files like mp4, mov, wmv, avi, etc.}

size:>500MB {all files that are larger than .5 GB}

size:500MB..800Mb {find files that are in this particular size range}

4. Find files within a specific folder.

Windows Desktop Search, by default, will find files across all folders that have been added to the search index. If your search results are cluttered due to this, you can quickly narrow them down to select folders as in the following examples:

todo folder:documents {search your My Documents folders}

folder:desktop ext:pdf date:today {find PDF documents that you saved today}

adobe setup.ini folder:c:\program files {search a file in Adobe’s installation folders}

5. Find Emails with Windows Search

Other than documents and files, Windows Search is an excellent tool for searching your Outlook emails and it works more or less like search commands in Gmail. Some examples:

from:aryaman date:this week {find emails from Aryaman that you received this week}

isread:false importance:high {find all your important but still unread emails}

hasattachment:true size:>5mb {find emails with bulky attachments}

subject:”credit card” from:bank.com {find all Credit Card related emails from the bank}

These are just a few useful examples but you should also check out MSDN for a complete list of advanced search operators that are supported by Windows Desktop Search.

Also, if you have trouble getting your files or your emails in the search results, chances are that you have not added the locations to your Windows Search Index. Go to Control Panel –> Indexing Options and modify your Indexed Locations.

Swami Vivekananda's Address to The World Congress of Religions

Swami Vivekananda’s message
on September 11, 1893:

"Sisters and Brothers of America. [At this moment came the three minute standing ovation from the audience of 7,000] It fills my heart with joy unspeakable to rise in response to the warm and cordial welcome which you have given us. I thank you in name of the most ancient order of monks in the world; I thank you in the name of the mother of religions; and I thank you in the name of millions and millions of Hindu people of all classes and sects.

"My thanks also to some of the speakers on this platform who, referring to the delegates from the Orient, have told you that these men from far-off nations may well claim the honor of bearing to different lands the idea of toleration.

"I am proud to belong to a religion which has taught the world both tolerance and universal acceptance. We believe not only in universal toleration but we accept all religions as true. I am proud to belong to a nation which has sheltered the persecuted and the refugees of all religions and all nations of the earth. I am proud to tell you that we have gathered in our bosom the purest remnant of the Israelites who came to Southern India and took refuge with us in very year in which their holy temple was shattered to pieces by Roman tyranny. I am proud to belong to the religion which has sheltered and is still fostering the remnant of the grand Zoroastrian nation.

"I will quote to you brethren a few lines from a hymn which I remember to have repeated from my earliest childhood, which is every day repeated by millions of human beings: 'As the different streams having their sources in different places all mingle their water in the sea, so, O Lord, the different paths which men take through different tendencies, various though they appear, crooked or straight, all lead to Thee.'

"The present convention, which is one of the most august assemblies ever held, is in itself a vindication, a declaration to the world of the wonderful doctrine preached in the Gita: 'Whosoever comes to me, though whatsoever form, I reach him; all men are struggling through paths which in the end lead to me.'

"Sectarianism, bigotry, and it's horrible descendant, fanaticism, have long possessed this beautiful Earth. They have filled the earth with violence, drenched it often and often with human blood, destroyed civilization, and sent whole nations to despair. Had it not been for these horrible demons, human society would be far more advanced than it is now.

"But their time is come; and I fervently hope that the bell that tolled this morning in honor of this convention may be the death-knell of all fanaticism, of all persecutions with the sword or with the pen, and of all uncharitable feelings between persons wending their way to the same goal.

How to lose weight naturally?

Baba Ramdev has revolutionized yoga and has presented people with the boost for the healthy living. Until now we did not took yoga as a main stream but just thought it to be a way of living by yogis. It was Baba Ramdev who introduced yoga into the mainstream making us realize that it became a part and parcel of our life and has ever since helped us to get rid of various chronic as well as acute diseases.

As such there are various yogic postures or asanas that are recommended by Baba Ramdev for various diseases and even for various lifestyle discomforts that include obesity and diabetes etc. In this way Baba Ramdev’s breathing exercise for weight lose can be performed as follows:

  • Lie down in supine position on the floor.
  • Pick your legs up and move them as if you are cycling slowly and steadily.
  • Do this for about 50 times taking break for about a minute or so after 20 cycling movements.
  • Then go onto repeat this with the other leg. Same way taking breaks and for the same duration.
  • Then in the same lying position move your feet up at least two feet up and down. Do so with one leg at a time.
  • Do so with the other leg repeating as such.
  • Then remain in the same position and after resting for a moment now go on to pick and move both your feet up and down to the same level. And both legs together.
  • During all this time one has to take care that the breathing must be as normal as possible.
  • In addition to this breathing exercise or the pranayams are also beneficial in order to lose weight. As Kapalbhati helps to lose weight.
  • Bhastrika pranayam
  • Anulom Vilom pranayam
  • Baharya pranayam
  • Udgeeth Pranayam
  • Bharamari Pranayam

10 things customers want on a SMALL BUSINESS WEBSITE

Economic Times, 6th September 2010.

1.Faster download: If you have a form to be downloaded, make sure it happens fast. And fast means 20 seconds flat

2.Clarity of what is on offer: Be clear not only in words but in visuals as well. Most people emote better with visuals than with words

3.Ease and speed of navigation: Signals of what to look for where should be clear. Even 60 seconds of visual search is considered wasteful time on the Web. Web patience of surfers is very short

4.Easy colours and fonts: Not burden the surfers already harassed eyes with too many colours. Use font sizes that are simple and legible. Fancy fonts are not necessary at all

5.Clear comparisons: You would do well to put up comparative statements of
product, price & service up-front

6.Product or service guarantee: Customers must be able to trust you

7.Returns policy: Be up-front in what you say. If you believe you will not take any returns, say so up-front

8.An integrity statement: Buyers like to deal with honest people

9.A human face to contact: Put up the face of someone on the website for sure. In this day of hard-tech, it is refreshing to see a face to connect with

10.A delivery promise: If you are able to make a promise here and keep it, you will go places
